2010-2011 CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIPS
This year's Closed Championships were held on Sunday 6th March at the Dr Challoners High School for Girls. Although there were fewer events, entries and spectators than last year, due mainly to the exclusion of the Under 13's and Under 15's events (which were held separately) and the Ladies Singles, Mixed Doubles and Junior Girls events (due to insufficient entries), the feedback from many competitors was positively encouraging. They were pleased with the revised layout of the tables, the longer match times, the lack of announcements during the matches and the earlier completion, and not unduly fussed when having to change tables due to the intruding sunlight - an issue which will need to be addressed at next year's Championships. A special word of thanks was conveyed to the organising committee, Brenda Cranfield-Thompson, David Stephan and James Johnson for a successful tournament, which would not have been possible without invaluable support from Ian Skeldon, Andy Seymour, Richard Cottle, and the assisting umpires.
We were treated to a feast of high quality table tennis with many matches going the full distance in all but one category. Junior players rose to the challenge and really bothered their more experienced seniors in the Mens Singles and Restricted Singles events. Of the many exciting matches, particularly memorable were the Vets final between Radovan Zivkovic and John Barclay which Rad just shaved 14-12 in the fifth, the Vets quarterfinal between Richard Cottle and John McCance when John got out of jail after saving 2 match points in the third, the Mens Singles quarterfinal in which Mark Scholfield gave the eventual champion Lucasz Janisiewicz a real fright before succumbing 7-11 in the fifth, the quarterfinal junior encounter between Jonny Smith and Matt Hazelwood in the Restricted which Jonny finally clinched 14-12 in the fifth, the earlier Restricted qualifier between juniors Christina Lane and Laurence Hodgson which Christina won 11-9 in the fifth, and the 5-setter Junior Doubles final in which the Hazelwood brothers, Marcus and Matt, narrowly prevailed over Eden Moafy and Laurence Hodgson.
Mens Singles: This event went to form. Top seed Lucasz Janisiewicz beat Gary Keers 3-1 in one semi, whilst second seed Radovan Zivkovic beat John McCance by the same score in the other. Lucasz retained the title by 3-1 in a fast and furious final.
Mens Doubles: After a hard fought 3-1 win over the holders Richard Cottle/Lucasz Janisiewicz in one semi, Jim Welch/Rob Hazelwood faced John Barclay/Mark Scholfield who beat John McCance/Radovan Zivkovic 3-1 in the other semi. The Welch/Hazelwood combination proved too strong as they captured the title by 3-0.
Vets Singles: After some thrilling matches in the earlier rounds, the semis were relatively mediocre, going to just 3 sets each. John Barclay prevailed over Rob Hazelwood in one semi whilst Rad Zivkovic got the better of John McCance in the other. The final however was probably the highlight of the tournament between the top seeds who just refused to give any ground. After several match points each, Rad finally clinched it 14-12 in the fifth.
Restricted Singles: The top two seeds Stefan König and Dave Sims contested the final of this event after beating two very useful juniors in the semis, Krishna Kankanwadi and Jonny Smith 3-1 and 3-0 respectively. Stefan proved a tad too strong for Dave, winning the title by 3-0.
Junior Boys Singles: The two Hazelwood brothers, Marcus and Matt, reached the final here having beaten Laurence Hodgson and Krishna Kankanwadi in 3 straight sets respectively in the semis. True to form, Marcus was the victor by 3-0.
Junior Doubles: In a fairly close semi the Eden Moafy/Laurence Hodgson pairing got past David Cottle/Christina Lane (who was a last minute replacement for a late withdrawal) by 3-1. The Hazelwood brothers then beat Krishna Kankanwadi/Jack Maskill fairly comfortably by 3-0 in the other semi. The final was an exciting encounter which the Hazelwoods triumphed by 11-8 in the fifth. With a clutch of trophies between father and sons, this turned out to be a very good day for the Hazelwood family!

2010-11 CADET CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Cadet Championships were held on Saturday 15th January at the Chalfont St. Peter C of E School and were very well supported with over 35 children between the ages of 9 and 14 participating in 4 events.
In the Under 11 Singles the two top seeds reached the final with George Denton eventually beating Tommy Taylor by 3 games to 2.
The Under 13 Singles was a little disappointing as the number 2 seed was not able to play, leaving the top seed Harrison Simmons to win the event without losing a game. The other finalist Harry Seymour put up a valiant fight but Harrison always had the edge.
The Under 15 Boys Singles was a hotly disputed event. The semi-finals between the top four seeds became a battle of the highest standard. Eventually the top two seeds Alex Nagle and Joseph Underwood (son of the Headmaster) reached the final. The first game in the final went to the favourite Alex, then Joseph fought back and won the second and third games. Based on the ease in which Joseph won the third it did appear that he might produce the surprise of the tournament, but Alex somehow managed to just win the fourth game. In the final game Alex got the start that he wanted and eventually won the event. It was a fantastic match to watch and a shame that we had to have a loser.
The Under 15 Girls Singles looked as though the second seed Lucy May might create a surprise and beat the first seed Rosalind Lane as she won the first two games. However, Rosalind then put her act together and proceeded to win the next three games with something to spare.
